Body Inscription Has Come a Long Distance From Prehistoric Times To Modern World
Since the very beginning, man had used variousmethods to show-offhis feelings and truequalities. This showing off is very much visible in the way a person dresses and the stuff he or she wears. For instance, most people like wearing military t-shirts because they symbolize courage, bravery and strength. Though a military t-shirt is something of a general nature, there are many personalized methods of showing off individuality and originality. One of the methods that have been around since a long time is the art of tattooing.
For many years, it was believed that tattoos emerged from Egypt as mummies of several pharaohs indicated the marks of tattoos in different places places. Yet, a 5300 year old mummy of Otzi the Iceman also had tattoo inscriptions on his skin. This proves that tattooing has been an art since the ancient times. The purpose behind those tattoos remains uncertain. Another prehistoric body discovered in Russia shows a good amount of body prints depicting magical and mythical figures and real beasts. A number of such mummies were alsodiscovered from the same place, all of which had a surplusamount of such tattoos around their bodies. As the Egyptian empire spreadwider, the tattoo practice and skillbegan to spreadfurther and further. In India, however, henna was also used to draw markings on the skin. These marking were only for beautification purpose. In Greek, tattooing is said to have been employed for an actual purpose for the first time as spies were tattoed with identification marks and secret codes, on the other hand, Romans began to use tattoos to mark their prisoners. This practice is still employed in Rome and many other areas.
In Samoan Islands, tattoo is also a part of tribal tradition which shows the social standing of a member. The chief of the tribe is usually the one with the most tattooes. A proper event is held in which younger chiefs get their marking to celebrate their coming of age. The marks are proudly carried as a symbol of their devotion to the roots.
Tattooing is known as a very important part of New Zealand’s culture. Moko art is a great example of the techniques and precision they have acquired along with time. Natives used carving techniques for this purpose.
The Indonesian Borneo tribe still uses its age old method of making marks on the skins. Their tattoos are very popular in the modern world and many people prefer the tribal art designs which in real are of Borneo origin. Like Borneo, there are several tribes in Africa which have a tradition of body art and design and because of their black skin color, they preferred scarification more than paint. This ancient art is said to have entered the modern western world along with the sailors and captivesbrought to England by Captain Cook. It is difficult to tell if it spread to America through the British or from Latin America. The very first tattoo shop was based n New York in 1846, and later, the electric tattooing machine took over. and from that time onwards, it has constantly gained huge appreciation in those countries.
