Lower Back Pain: Can It Come From Kidney Trouble?
There can be dozens of possible causes of back pain. Most of the time, nerve damage in the spine or injuries to the muscles, tendon and ligaments of the back are at fault. However, sometimes your pain is coming from a different source all together.
The trouble may be coming from an organ inside your body: namely, a kidney problem. Kidney stone pain, according to many people who have experienced it, is some of the worst pain you’re ever likely to feel.
So, what are the signs and symptoms that your back pain is due to a kidney problem rather than nerve damage or a muscular injury?
One of the best ways to tell is the location of your pain. The most intense pain is likely to occur in the area between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your hips. It is likely to happen more toward your sides and away from your spinal column.
Pain from a kidney disorder sometimes comes on very quickly. Everything seems fine - but a few minutes later you’re dealing with severe discomfort.
Kidney stones sometimes cause back pain when they move from the kidneys down to the bladder. Sometimes a kidney stone will become lodged in a ureter, which obstructs the flow of urine from a kidney to the bladder. This is likely to cause severe pain.
Darker than average urine is another common sign of a kidney problem like an infection or a kidney stone. This may indicate that there’s blood in your urine stream. It’s best to talk to your doctor as soon as you can if this happens.
When you have a kidney problem or some other disorder of the urinary tract, you’ll probably feel a need to urinate more often than usual. However, most of the time, not much urine will actually come out.
It’s not unusual to feel a burning or stinging sensation when urinating.
It’s not always necessary to have shock wave therapy or kidney removal surgery to get rid of kidney stones. Sometimes, they pass out of your body naturally in your urine stream. This is more likely to take place when you drink a lot of water. When this happens, your back pain comes to an end.
Fortunately, although kidney stones can be extremely painful, they’re not considered to be life-threatening.
However, the same cannot be said for a kidney infection, which can lead to kidney failure. Kidney failure can be fatal. Therefore, if you even suspect your back pain is coming from a kidney infection, it’s best to call a doctor right away.
