Pure Sleep Tonight
Research has shown that approximately 70 million people in the United States are affected by a sleep problem. About 40 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20-30 million are affected by intermittent sleep-related problems. However, an overwhelming majority of sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated (National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, 1992).
Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders are estimated to cost Americans over $100 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, sick leave, and property and environmental damage (National Sleep Foundation).
Let’s face it, broken night sleep, being unable to get to sleep for hours, waking up after only 3 or 4 hours sleep has happened to most of us. However, when this becomes a continuous cycle it really is time to take some action.
You may well ask why is this happening. It could be for any of the following reasons:
To fall aspect you must be cool; the body temperature and the brain’s sleep-wake cycle are closely linked. A lot of people find it quite hard to fall asleep on hot summer nights, and when they do fall aspect they can a restless night. This is because the blood flow mechanism that transfers core body heat to the skin works best between 18 and 30 degrees.
You might feel stressed about something happening in your life, therefore the mind is unable to relax and just ‘cut off’, such a stimulated mind will be unable to tell the body to rest, so you will get restless sleep patterns.
Diet is also an extremely important factor. It is a fact that when the diet is healthy e.g. plenty of fruit and vegetable, fibre, lean meats etc. and sugar and processed food are minimal in your diet, you will certainly find it easier to fall and stay asleep.
For instance, after a Christmas or thanksgiving feast you feel so incredibly tired that you will find it easy to fall asleep. Such holiday food will include turkey or chicken which are very high in an amino acid called trytophan, which has been shown to affect the part of the brain that governs sleep. The body converts tryptophan into serotonin, which is then converted into melatonin. Both serotonin and melatonin make you feel relaxed and sleepy.
So, if you feel the need to eat before bedtime have a glass of milk to piece of cheese which will boost your levels of tryptophan, which will make getting to sleep easier.
