Your Kitchen Is a Treasure Trove of Insomnia Remedies
When you have insomnia, intones the narrator in the 1999 hit movie Fight Club, you’re never really asleep and you’re never really awake. If you’re not asleep and you’re not awake, where does that leave you then? Probably googling your way into the morning, looking for insomnia remedy.
The bad news for insomniacs like you is that sleep will never come easy to you. You would never be able to zonk out in the afternoons or during your lunch break; or find sleep even while lolling about in a king-sized bed. The good news is that as far as insomnia remedy is concerned, there is a whole lot out of options out there ranging from products like Melatrol to complementary and alternative medicines.
Interestingly, food - or the clever use thereof - can serve as an insomnia remedy, too. These food and herbs may not be recognized by the medical community as “cures” for insomnia but they have been used to great effect by many people. In fact, some of them just might do wonders for you!
1. Warm milk
Your mom swears by warm milk, and so did her mom and several generations of moms before her. Warm milk is a homemade insomnia remedy that has been the staple of households for hundreds of years. Whether its the placebo effect at work or the trytophan in milk, you have to admit a warm cup does make you feel sleepy, doesn’t it?
2. Food rich in trytophan
Turkey, chicken, cheese, milk, and beans have trytophan, a chemical that is also present in milk. This chemical is said to be a good insomnia remedy because it is converted in the brain into serotonin which, in turn, makes you feel sleepy and relaxed.
3. Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates can boost your body’s production of serotonin and melatonin. Put this good effect of carbs to use by munching on crackers before bedtime.
When it comes to insomnia remedy, just about anything goes. After all, if you’re never really asleep and you’re never really awake, you have plenty of room to get creative and experimental.
